Kindle Colorsoft Review: Is It Worth the Hype?

Is it worth the price to get your reading library a burst of color?

Amazon’s new Kindle Colorsoft aimed to bridge the gap between physical and digital books with vibrant covers. For someone like me who appreciates colorful book covers, a new Kindle could be life-changing—and yet, this Color e-reader left me feeling conflicted.

The device itself is undeniably sleek and lightweight, making it easy to hold for long reading sessions. The 7″ screen feels larger than the most recent Paperwhite and boasts slightly better battery life, too. My excitement grew when I received my Colorsoft on a blustery Friday night—the perfect setting for curling up with a good book.

But as the weekend went by, that initial delight faded as I started to scrutinize the device’s display. The colors on the e-reader weren’t quite as vibrant and accurate as they should be. Even in natural lighting, some shades of yellow turned into a muddy brown, while others looked washed out or flat.

Amazon says they’re working on software updates to improve these aspects, but for now, it felt like there was just too much to fix. I’ve been using the “Vivid” setting, which promises more vibrant colors; even so, the colors still seemed muted and often lacked that punch of vibrancy.

While this is a new device, the lack of proper support from Amazon for their most popular reader feels like a sign that the Colorsoft was rushed to market. My hope is that future updates will improve this feature and deliver on the promise of vibrant color.
