The Assassin’s Apprentice is the first book in a thrilling new series from bestselling author Robin Hobb. The Farseer Trilogy was her most popular work, and this new adventure promises to be just as well-received. FitzChivalry has been raised alongside Prince Dutiful, Chade’s apprentice assassin, who became his mentor after they found him abandoned in the forest. But now that he has come of age, it is time for him to leave behind all he knows and become a royal assassin.
And so Fitz, now Tom Badgerlock sets off for the castle to take his place among the King’s Men. But he will be a far different assassin than Chade could have ever been – even though they are both from Buck Duchy. For not only does Fitz have magic and two lives in his past; there is also something special about him that others sense but cannot share: an affinity with animals…
The Series includes the following books:
- – Assassin’s Apprentice (1990)
- – Royal Assassin (1991)
- – Assassin’s Quest (1993)
- – Fool’s Errand (1996)
My review of the Assassin’s Apprenctice (book):
I read this book in high school and it was the first fantasy novel I had ever encountered. It’s been over 15 years since then, and while there are more well-known series out there now, I have to say that Robin Hobb is still a favorite author of mine. The Assassin’s Apprentice has an interesting premise: Fitz is abandoned by his family as they flee their home country for a better life elsewhere; he’s left with nothing but his wits and can’t even remember who or what he really is until the story progresses some ways. For those reasons alone I found myself rooting for him during my reading experience. He undergoes quite a few trials throughout the course of the story – from gaining status in the royal court, to getting caught up in political schemes at home and abroad.
The writing style is not heavy handed or difficult like many other fantasy novels out there- it’s a pleasant read that will keep you interested until the very end. The Assassin’s Apprentice has been my favorite book by her thus far; I look forward with great anticipation for what she publishes next!
